From The Founder

As the head of the Heart of a Horse Foundation I am familiar with scenes of suffering and hope.
Last month I was called out on an abuse case in behalf of a horse named Lady. The caller was not the owner but a wonderful individual named Eva whose relation to Lady was her extreme concern about the condition she found her in. When I arrived on the scene I saw that Lady was malnourished and in bad shape. She had been confined to her stall for months. Her hoofs were overgrown and infected; she was suffering from laminitas.
When I asked Eva what had happened, she said the owners had abandoned her in the stall. People would come by and occasionally throw her some hay but it wasn’t enough to keep her healthy. Eva appealed to Heart of a Horse for help. We supplied feed and medical relief. Lady responded to the treatment and seemed to be doing well. But her abuse had been so bad that her recovery was incomplete and eventually Eva had to make the hard decision to put her down. I said to Eva “You were a blessing for Lady.” She said “No, April. Lady was a blessing to me.” This is a story which even though it did not end as we would have wished shows how the mission of Heart of a Horse is not just to help horses but to support the circle of life that horses are part of and that makes them such beautiful gifts to us all.
It’s been close to three years now since I created
the Heart of a Horse Foundation. I started by helping a handful of horses and now we are helping hundreds. We are also helping many people who are disabled or in need and who depend on horses for therapy and companionship, We provide hay for the hungry and foot care for horses who would otherwise be lame. We provide medical supplies and rehab for horses who have been neglected and abandoned. We rescue horses from kill pens and we provide much needed support for horse therapy programs that use rescue horses to help others. When I think about all the things we have accomplished and all of the struggles we’ve gone through, I am convinced more than ever that this work must continue and must grow so that we can help not only hundreds but thousands, that we can be there eventually for all horses and people who need us.
Please come and join us August 15, at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club which will be honoring Heart of a Horse at the Bombardier Open. There will be celebrities and kid activities, a silent auction and raffle, and you will get to see the “Game of Kings,” the oldest sport still played which dates back to the time of Genghis Khan.
